You may have heard that a gym ball is a good thing to use as a desk chair in the name of good posture. Are they really?
Personally, I think these balls can cause a great deal of strain and tension to your back as you try to balance and perhaps force yourself to sit upright. Here are a few things to consider before using a gym ball as a chair:
They might be a good sitting alternative, still not for a long time, for those that don’t have back issues and those of you that understand well how posture works.
If computer work is what you do for a living and you are trying to improve your posture and/or cultivate good postural habits I suggest that instead, you invest in a standing table (or find a table that fits this purpose, like me on the right). With this table, you can switch from standing to sitting throughout the day. Another thing you can consider is to have a couple of different chairs that allow you to sit a bit differently, again switching from one to the other.
Here’s the deal about sitting, the problem isn’t the sitting but the amount of time you spend sitting in the same position. So, the important thing is a variety from sitting to standing to walking away from your desk along with some sort of stretching as often as you can during the day.
So, gym balls? Great in the gym but not as a desk chair.
