What can you do to sit a bit less?
Let’s talk about sitting in your work-place.
We both know that there is too much sitting going on but what are you doing to sit a bit less?
I’m bringing you a few ideas.
I know it is a polite gesture to say to someone that comes to see you in your office, ‘Please, take a seat’.
But, times have changed…
It’s likely that whoever comes to see you in your office has been sitting a lot already – maybe at their desk, in a meeting or on the way to work.
You, likewise, might have been sitting for a long time too.
With so much sitting going on wouldn’t it be better for you to say, instead, ‘Let’s go for a walk’ or ‘Let’s stand’?
By doing so you aren’t only helping yourself but your colleagues/visitor too.
If we want to take our well-being seriously and enjoy a better quality of life then culture and habits need to change just like life does.
So, what if next time someone comes to see you in your office, you don’t offer them a seat? Instead, take this as an opportunity to go for a walk to move the body and refresh the mind.
Another idea is to have a high table in your office without chairs where you can have conversations or discussions standing up.
Also, in the work-place we don’t need breakout areas with fancy chairs and tables (this is what I see, a lot!). We need breakout areas with space to stretch and devices to help people release tension in the body and mind.
If you chair meetings, encourage or invite people to stand every few minutes during the meeting or if it is a short meeting do you really need to sit down (again)?
These are just a few ideas (I will be bringing you more) that you can implement in your work-place or bring to the people who can implement them.
And here is the thing, EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS!
Here’s a summary:
What are the benefits of these? They:
Please take good care of yourself and your colleagues. You may want to pass this onto some of your colleagues and maybe your boss or line manager.
